At this year’s Denver International Spirits Competition, held on March 21st and 22nd, we proved once again that Los Magos Sotol is a winner. Thirty industry-leading judges—from beverage experts to traders, and sommeliers—tasted hundreds of spirits, and among that wide and impressive pool, Los Magos Sotol was awarded a silver medal of excellence.
Like all prestigious competitions, judges of the Denver International Spirits Competition sampled spirits in a double-blind tasting and scored them on a 100-point scale. This tasting included a range of categories—102 in total. But the intensity of the competition wasn’t the only thing that made this win so unique for Los Magos Sotol; it was the fact that sotol wasn’t evaluated within its own category – one doesn’t yet exist for sotol. Instead sotol is folded into the unaged white spirits open category, and yet, the judges couldn’t help but celebrate ours. Noting its enticing blend of spice and citrus, Los Magos Sotol was praised for its vibrant clarity and complexity. Ultimately ranking in the mezcal category, it received a remarkable 88.5 points and earned a silver medal. Los Magos went on to also win silver in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in April and was awarded 90 points in the New York International Spirits Competition in May. Again, Los Magos was competing in an open category and likely the first time many of the judges experienced sotol given that most sotol brands are not inclined to attempt medaling when a category doesn’t yet exist.
Sustainably sourced, handcrafted, and triple-distilled, Los Magos Sotol draws on centuries-old traditions to create a soulful, artisanal spirit. We’re thrilled to see it setting records, all while honoring the rich history of sotol and sharing its one-of-a-kind experience with new communities. For us, every celebration begins with community, and we know that this win is made that much sweeter by the Los Magos Sotol community who has supported us thus far.
